Spike, a member of the K-9 patrol with the Virginia Capitol Police, spent years with U.S. Marine Jared Heine, up until Heine was sent out a home to Louisiana after a series of brain injuries.

After several years of protecting each other in Afghanistan, Heine and Spike were broken up, and Heine started battling with post-traumatic stress disorder.
